2017 : SXC Vs GCC Old Xaverians Clinch the Nuwara Eliya Mayor’s Cup

The Nuwara Eliya seasonal programmes were heralded this year with commencement of one of the prime sports events during the Holiday season, the Battle of the Oldies -Cricket Encounter between the old boys of St Xavier’s College and Gamini National College Nuwara Eliya for the Mayor’s Challenge Cup last Saturday amidst a large gathering at the Race Course grounds.

This Encounter played for the 7th consecutive year coincides the 70th Anniversary of the Old Boys’ Association of St. Xavier’s College founded in 1947. Having won the toss, the GCC skipper Keith Chandrasena elected to bat first, and at the end of the 38th over the GCC were all out for 213 runs. The main scorers for GCC were Chandimal Weeraratne 29 runs, Lakmal Eranga 24 runs, Sumith 21 runs; Tharanga Wijekoon 8-3-36 , Shenal Fernando 8-2-37, Sudaharan Awaday 6-2-43, Tony Peter Paul 7-2-28. In reply to the GCC score Old Xaverians reached 214 runs at the last ball of the 40thover.

The main contributors for the old Xaverians team were Dion Fernando with 68 runs, Tharanga Wijekoon 58 runs, Rukmal Fernando 23 runs, and Shannon Fernando 16 runs, Asanka 8-2-42, Buddhika 8-2-23, Keith 7-2-33. Until the last ball, the match was open for both sides and it turned out to a nail biting game. Mr. M. M. P. Seneratne, the Oldest Active Kings Scout in Sri Lanka attended the match as the Chief Guest while the Mayor of Nuwara Eliya Mahinda Dodampegamage, Principals of the Colleges, Chairman of the Salt Corporation Ex.SSP Ayub Khan witnessed the game. Addressing the audience the chief guest who is an old Xaverian completed his higher studies at Ananda College Colombo mentioned that all the Big Matches should follow this exemplary Encounter as it held a high level of discipline and code of ethics.

Dion Fernando won the best batsman’s award presented in memory of the late Thomas Bastian, Asanka De Silva won the best bowler’s award presented in memory of the late Francis Xavier, Buddhika won the best fielder’s award presented in memory of the late H.Hameed, and Tharanga Wijekoon won the Man of the Match award presented in memory of the late Percy Jayaratne.

Umpires from the Kandy Umpire Association adjudged the match. The inaugural Battle of the Comrades between Old Xaverians and Old Paynterites ends in a draw bringing glory to Old Xaverians- Having won the toss the Old Xaverians elected to bat first , and scored 172/5 in 20 Overs ( Tony 14,Wanapushpa 32,Sanjeewa 22,Tharanga W.07,Ratnasiri 25,Zakeer 20*, Ramlan 14*- Saman 4/17/3, Joney 3/27/1,Kumara 4/36/1 ) .In response the Paynterites scored 39/4 in 7 Overs (Joney 08,Shakeela 17 *,Rikaz 01,Nuwan 6,Namal 0,- Sanjeewa 3/21/2, Sudaharan 3/10/1,Ramlan 1/4/1)Due to the inclined weather the match was called off at 2.30 p.m.The Sir Samuel W.Baker Challenge Cup was jointly awarded to both teams by Mr.Zahir , the founder member of Baker Foundation. Old Xaverians Vs Paynterites: A Thrilling Clash for the Baker’s Cup

The 6th Old Xaverians versus Paynterites Cricket Encounter concluded on a high note, marking the Battle of the Comrades for the prestigious Baker’s Cup. This exhilarating match took place at the picturesque Race Course Grounds on April 4th, kicking off the holiday season with a display of exceptional cricketing prowess.

In a strategic move, Old Xaverian skipper Sanjeewa Weerasinghe, after winning the toss, opted to bat first. The match saw a competitive battle unfold, with SXCOBA scoring 128 runs for the loss of 10 wickets, while PMMSPPA managed to chase down the target with 129 runs for the loss of 9 wickets.

Notably, Old Xaverian Mohomed Ishad shone brightly, earning the title of Best Batsman with an impressive 32 runs to his credit.

The event was graced by esteemed guests, including the Principal of Paynter Memorial School, Ms. C. Kumarashinghe, officials and members of SXCOBA, the President of the Baker Foundation, and Mr. Hiran Kodithuwakku, Secretary of the Baker Foundation. This year’s event was generously sponsored by the St. Xavier’s Old Boys’ Association (SXCOBA), underscoring their commitment to promoting sportsmanship and camaraderie.

Looking ahead, the next exciting encounter is set for April 20th, 2024, when SXCOBA will face off against Gamini PPA for the Mayor’s Cup. This upcoming match is poised to make history as the longest continuous hardball contest played in Nuwara Eliya, spanning an impressive 15 years.

The SXCOBA team, including S. Sujeewan (05 runs), Sanjeewa Weerasinghe (11 runs), Mohomed Ramlan (01 run), Mohomed Ishard (32 runs), Gerald Anthony (14 runs), Pradeepan Jeganathan (16 runs), Tony Peter-Paul (04 runs), John Christopher (12 runs), K. Muralidharan (01 run), T. Lukshan (01 run), and Wanapushpa Peter-Paul (02 not out), displayed remarkable sportsmanship and skill on the field.

Behind the scenes, Coach Mohomed Zaky, Manager UC Emmanuel, and Coordinator John Christopher played vital  roles, contributing their dedication and commitment to the team’s success.
