About the college
Principal's Message
A Testament to the Enduring Legacy of St. Xavier’s College.
Good evening President Chandana Fernando, Joint Secretaries and members of the OBA, Teachers, Special Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen.
In reflecting upon the rich history that spans 164 years, I am reminded of our deep gratitude to the pioneers of St. Xavier’s Church, commemorating 175 years of its inception in the hills of Nuwara Eliya. The symbiotic relationship between the church and the College has been a beacon of enlightenment, guiding us through the ebbs and flows of time.
At the outset, I wish to thank the members of the OBA for inviting me and the staff of our College to be a part of the 76th Anniversary Celebrations of the OBA, the Oldest Functioning Past Pupils Association in the District of Nuwara Eliya. Let me thank God Almighty for all the grace showered upon the College and the OBA.
Today, as we stand at the crossroads of an ever-evolving world, where change is the only constant, we find ourselves confronted with different challenges. In the realms of education, traditions, practices, technology, and human values, we are tasked with navigating a dynamic landscape. It is imperative that amidst these changes, we preserve the essence of our institution—a foundation rooted in the teachings of St. Xavier and St. De La Salle.
In the spirit of these visionary educators, who laid the groundwork for modern education and teacher training, let us not only embrace change but also infuse our native culture and traditions to fortify the authenticity of our mission.
Addressing our academic community, I urge each staff member to internalize the 12 virtues of a teacher, as advocated by the La Sallian principle: Gravity, Silence, Humility, Prudence, Wisdom, Patience, Reserve, Gentleness, Zeal, Vigilance, Piety, and Generosity. By incorporating these values into your professional journey, I am confident that you will contribute significantly to the holistic development of our students. Our youth, our future, require not only knowledge but also the guidance, care, and affection that are the cornerstones of a successful life.
I extend my heartfelt appreciation to the devoted Old Boys of St. Xavier’s College for their unwavering support in reviving and sustaining this noble institution. The changes we witness today are a result of collective efforts, and I am deeply thankful for your loyalty to your Alma Mater. The journey ahead involves addressing pressing needs such as the renovation of our school buildings, enhancing English language standards, sports, inter alia, and providing financial assistance to students facing economic challenges.
In recognizing the sacrifices of our dedicated staff members, who travel from distant places to Nuwara Eliya, I commend their tireless efforts and enthusiasm. Your commitment is the driving force behind our collective progress.
Dear Old Xaverians, as custodians of our shared history and bearers of the torch, I implore you to continue supporting us. The St. Xavier’s College you see today is evolving, and your enduring support remains pivotal in propelling this institution to new heights. Together, let us embark on this journey of growth and transformation, ensuring a brighter future for generations to come. Thank you.
