Somewhere in 2001, on the busy streets of Nuwara Eliya, amidst the flurry of shops, I found myself waiting at a print shop for a letter to be typed. Yet, fate had a serendipitous encounter in store. A young man with an expression of seriousness stood nearby.
In a twist of fortune, Mr. Paul Perera, a dear friend and the Joint Secretary of the OBA, crossed our paths. With characteristic warmth, he introduced me to the enigmatic figure beside me – none other than Mr. Michael de Silva. Though unfamiliar in person, his name had resonated in many conversations prior.
This chance meeting in Nuwara Eliya kindled a bond that transcended mere acquaintance. From the OBA meetings to warm dinners, cricket encounters, sing along events; from the corridors of the Ministry of Education to the vibrant streets of Kandy and Colombo, our paths intertwined in a tapestry of shared experiences. Together, we navigated bureaucratic networks, engaged in spirited discussions with officials, and even graced the halls of Ananda College Colombo for a combined old boys’ meeting in order to revive the school that nurtured us during our primary education.
Our camaraderie blossomed into an unbreakable alliance, where transparency reigned supreme. His trust was such that his son sought academic guidance in Kandy when the writer was the Vice Principal of Trinity College. Michael harbored grand aspirations not only for his alma mater but also for the quaint village of Shanthipura and the city of Nuwara Eliya. His allegiance to a political ideology was unwavering, always championing the cause of justice and equity.
In his expansive heart, there were no boundaries. Young or old, educated or not, all were embraced with equal warmth and affection. Such was the magnetic charm of Michael de Silva, a beacon of hope and integrity in a world often marred by cynicism.
With profound sorrow, we bid adieu to this cherished personality in our community. Michael de Silva’s departure has left an irreplaceable chasm in our hearts, yet his indelible imprint endures as a guiding light for us all.
Michael’s journey through life was epitomized by unwavering dedication, fervent passion, and an unyielding commitment to service. From his illustrious tenure as a scholar and athlete at St. Xavier’s College and University of Kelaniya, where he soared both academically and athletically, to his roles as Honorary Secretary (2014-2018) and Senior Vice President (2018 -until his demise)of the SXCOBA, Michael’s influence resonated deeply and expansively.
His sphere of influence transcended academic realms as he delved into public service, distinguished by his tenure on the Central Provincial Council. Whether steering the ship as Secretary of the SDS at St. Xavier’s College or fervently advocating within the SXCOBA, Michael’s leadership was a beacon of excellence.
Michael’s selflessness was exemplified through tireless advocacy for social causes, including campaigning equitable remuneration for Ayurvedic Doctors in Sri Lanka, leading numerous Shramadana Campaigns, engaging in multifaceted social welfare endeavors, and providing sage counsel to those in need. His visionary zeal for education found expression through ground-breaking initiatives like the Noel Nadeson Scholarship by the SXCOBA, bestowing opportunities upon deserving students to pursue their aspirations.
Yet, beyond his numerous accomplishments, it was Michael’s profound integrity and genuine character that set him apart. In a world often marred by ambiguity and pretence, Michael remained a paragon of authenticity, his actions and words a testament to unwavering principles.
As we grieve the loss of a dear comrade, confidant, and mentor, let us also celebrate the resplendent tapestry of Michael de Silva’s life. Though he may have departed this mortal realm, his spirit shall endure as a perpetual source of inspiration, compelling us to pursue excellence, serve others selflessly, and uphold the noble values of integrity and compassion that he so ardently cherished.
On the fateful day of his departure, amidst a gathering that bore testimony to the profound esteem in which he was held, Michael transitioned peacefully. A loving father to his son Chathura de Silva, who continues to honour his legacy through the OBA scholarship programme. Michael’s memory shall forever be enshrined in our hearts.
As we reflect on his legacy, let us bid him farewell with solemn reverence, cherishing the warmth and compassion he bestowed upon our lives. May the soul of this thorough gentleman find eternal repose.
With heartfelt condolences,
Thomas Benjamin Jeganathan
