The 76th Anniversary Celebrations of the OBA of St Xavier’s College, Nuwara Eliya took place last week in Nuwara eliya amidst a large gathering at the Queensbury Hotel, Nuwara Eliya.
The occasion was patronised by Rev. Fr. Anton Justin OMI-Assistant Parish Priest of SXC, the DIG Nuwara Eliya- Mr.Lionel Gunathilake, District Engineer- Ms,C. Seneviratne, Principal of Gamini CC Mr.Nimal Kumaradasa, Sectional Head SXC-Ms. Luxmi Gunasekara, Secretary of the SDS-Mr.Princely David, Ms.Ashnathi Nicholas the Project Director SXC, Vateran National Champion Athlete Ms.Venisha Perera, Old Xaverians and well-wishers.
The highlight of the evening was the introduction of the newly appointed Principal Mathew Paulraj who assumed duty as the 14th lay Principal of the College last October.
Delivering the welcome address, Ex President RM Nawaz stated that the main objective of the event was to foster reunion and comradeship among the old boys.
Addressing the gathering, the Principal of the College passionately called upon the old boys, devoted parents, and dedicated teachers to unite in a collective effort to rejuvenate the noble legacy of the College, unfurling its banner once more for the betterment of the children of Nuwara Eliya.
Expressing heartfelt gratitude, the Principal extended thanks to the educational authorities for entrusting him with the responsibility of serving the alma mater—a sacred duty he cherishes, having undergone his formative years under the guidance of the Mr. Noel Nadeson, a Principal hailed as par excellence.
Acknowledging the steadfast support rendered by the OBA over the course of an impressive 76 years, the Principal underscored the crucial role played by this unwavering alliance. As the custodians of tradition and torchbearers of the institution’s rich history, the OBA has been an invaluable pillar of strength.
With a sense of anticipation and pride, the Principal revealed a significant milestone on the horizon—the impending 165th anniversary of the College’s dedicated service to the community slated for the next year. Encouraging all present to actively participate in and contribute to the forthcoming endeavours aimed at the revival of the College; he emphasized the need for collective support in preserving and fortifying the institution’s profound impact on generations past, present, and future.
In this rallying cry, the Principal artfully wove together gratitude, history, and a call to action, inspiring all stakeholders to join hands in securing a vibrant future for the alma mater.
The OBA handed over twenty scholarships to present students, Hardball Cricket gear to recommence Junior level Cricket, and fifty renovated vintage photographs to be displayed in the College.
In a symbolic gesture aligning with the spirit of the Christmas season, participants were entrusted with the responsibility of planting 76 Cypress trees, fostering a commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability.
In a parallel celebration of the institution’s historical tapestry, the OBA compilers marked the 175th Anniversary of the Church by releasing a meticulously crafted book chronicling the life story of St. Francis Xavier, the patron saint of the College. This literary tribute not only encapsulated the profound legacy of the saint but also served as a testament to the enduring connection between the institution and its rich cultural and spiritual heritage.
Recognizing the dedication and tireless efforts of volunteers, accolades were bestowed upon them for the seamless execution of a Shramadana campaign. The awards served as a tangible appreciation for their commitment to community service, underscoring the ethos of selfless contribution that lies at the heart of the institution’s values.
In these multifaceted initiatives, participants were not only agents of positive change but also contributors to the preservation of cultural and environmental legacies, embodying the principles that define the spirit of the institution.
In a comprehensive overview, the Secretary Benjamin Jeganathan took the floor to present the Annual Report, encapsulating a half-decade of impactful projects undertaken by the Old Boys’ Association. The audience was given an insightful glimpse into a series of endeavours that spanned diverse spheres, reflecting the OBA’s steadfast commitment to the betterment of the college community.
Among the noteworthy initiatives outlined in the report were the establishment of a school library, extensive renovation projects, impactful Shramadana campaigns, the promotion of hardball Cricket in the picturesque locale of Nuwara Eliya, and a spectrum of educational programs. Additionally, the OBA undertook ambitious English language skills development programs, showcasing a holistic approach to academic enrichment.
A resounding moment of recognition echoed through the venue as the Secretary highlighted the OBA’s philanthropic endeavour—a generous donation exceeding Rs. one million towards the renovation of the church. The audience, appreciating the magnitude of these collective efforts, responded with a thunderous applause, acknowledging the positive impact generated by the OBA’s sustained initiatives.
Looking forward, the Secretary issued a compelling call to action, urging Old Xaverians both near and far, to maintain active engagement with the OBA. The collective endeavour to propel the college to new heights was underscored, emphasizing the pivotal role that the global Xaverian community plays in steering the institution towards a promising future. In this rallying cry, the Secretary invited alumni from across the globe to join hands in advancing the college to the next level, fostering a sense of shared responsibility and pride in the institution’s continued evolution.
OBA Senior advisor and renowned musician Paul Perera, a stalwart in the field, gracefully raised his glass to propose a heartfelt toast, extending warm wishes for a fruitful and productive year ahead to the esteemed Xaverian community in 2024.
Nilan de Zoysa, serving as the Joint Secretary, took the podium to express gratitude, presenting the vote of thanks. In his address, he underscored the significance of preserving St. Xavier’s College (SXC) as the oldest functioning school in the district. He emphasized that the institution stands as a beacon not only for academic excellence but also as a symbol promoting ethnic harmony and prosperity within the community. His words echoed the timeless importance of safeguarding SXC’s legacy for the betterment of the collective welfare and unity.
